The first stop is the remarkable Temple of Artemis, one of the seven marvels of the ancient world. This awe-inspiring monument, also known as the Aretmesium, was built by the Greeks to honor Artemis, the goddess of the moon and the hunt. The temple's unique worship cult symbolized fertility with its depiction of numerous breasts. Sadly, it was intentionally set on fire in 356 BCE by Herostratus, coinciding with Alexander the Great's birth. Nevertheless, the temple was reconstructed using original remnants, and some artifacts are now exhibited at the British Museum.
Next, marvel at the magnificent amphitheater, a colossal structure originally built during the Hellenistic period. With its impressive design featuring 66 rows and luxurious marble-backed seats for distinguished individuals, this 25,000-seat venue has been a host to various events throughout history, including plays, concerts, and gladiator battles.
Continuing the journey, explore the esteemed Celsius Library of Ephesus. Commissioned by Tiberius Julius Acquila in the second century, this library housed an astounding collection of over 12,000 scrolls. Adorned with three doorways representing wisdom, intelligence, and knowledge, it stood as a testament to the intellectual prowess of the ancient world. Although the library was damaged by fire during the Gothic invasion, it was meticulously restored in the fourth century, accompanied by the addition of a captivating fountain.
